Go Green - Gardens and Natural reserves - Bukit Timah Nature reserve.



This is the highest peak of the whole island. Which is stands at an altitude of 164m. Bukit Timah is located near the centre of the Singapore main island.

Record show that its contains more species of trees than the whole of north America and it for you to find out ...... there are so many things to learn from the forest.

Before we start our journey into the forest, let get to know about Bukit Timah Natural Reserve a bit more.

Bukit means hill in Malay language and Timah means Tin, but base on some research there are no tin deposit are to be found in the area. I also have been wondering how this place got it name. So if you have the answer kindly write to us and tell us all about it.

Do you know that Bukit Timah Natural Reserve was the first forest reserves to be established in the Singapore in 1883. When the government of the Straits Settlements commissioned a report on the forests, it was recommended that several reserves (include Bukit Timah) were created on Singapore island.



Coming to the nature reserves for a hike!

Today, as record show Bukit Timah and Central Catchment nature reserves houses over 840 flowering plants and over 500 species of animals.

You can see many things during the stroll up the hill for examples you can find trees like Dillenia grandifolia, the Dipterocarpaceae and many more. Some of Common animals include millipedes, carpenter bees, and many different types of birds and insects.

Along the way, look out for the cute plantain Squirrels.

Be prepared, bring along a bottle of water!

If you wanted to learn and experience more of the forest, I suggest you join the free tour.

The guide will introduce you to the forest structure and flora and fauna of our only substantial patch of primary forest. Meet in front of the ranger counter at the visitor centre at 3.55 pm.

There are lots of activities at the Bukit Timah, people come here to stroll, run and hike. You also can find a mountain bike trails for those whom like to cycle.

If you are driving here, parking lots are also available at the Upper Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Beauty world. And if you are coming on Sunday car pool or take a public transport here. The reserves are crowded on weekends and public holidays.

By Bus

SBS service 170. TIBs services 67, 75, 171, 173, 184, 852 and 961. Alight along Upper Bukit Timah Road after the Courts furniture store and walk to the end of Hindhede Drive.
