Walking through Historical Zone of Singapore Chinatown.

The colorful painted shop house and the covered sidewalks (called 5-foot ways) of Singapore Chinatown Today, should be credit to one person for planting the first seed is Raffles himself. One theory is that Raffles purposely divided the races for harmony.

“Through the decades, Singapore Chinatown was the home to early setters, many whom shared a room with complete strangers.

The story life in the early Chinatown is presented to tourists and young Singaporeans alike to the Chinatown Heritage Centre (CHC) on Pagoda Street.

The Heritage centre allows visitors to experience for themselves what life was like when the first immigrants arrived, when living in spaces were crowded, unhealthy and without privacy."

The best time to capture the atmospheres and the spirits of Singapore Chinatown were be mid-January, which is before Chinese New Year. It's is incredibly lively during Chinese New year period. "Gong Xi Fa Cai” which means Happy New Year.

Singaporean make it a point to go down there just before Chinese New Year to enjoy the festive lights, eat good food and buy gold jewellerys. For some local, it is the place with freshest and cheapest wet market in town.

If you scout around, you will see rows of preserved historic shop houses along both sides of street selling stuffs like lacquer wave, woodcrafts, masks, antiques and furniture and many more.........! Chinatown offer great variety of great foods like Hainanese chicken rice, Hakka yong tau foo, Teochew porridge, fish ball noodles and fried kway teow. Don't miss out on our local favorite delicacy "bak kwa" (barbecued meat). "Bak kwa" is very popular during Chinese New Year period and you can see people queuing up during the last few days of Chinese New Year.

You will understand the mix cultures well when you visit Chinatown. You would surprise to find a Chinese temple, Islamic mosque, Hindu temple and Christian church all in one neighborhood.

If you want to experience "The soul of Chinatown" you can get a brochure of "Chinatown walking guide" from the Singapore Visitors Centre and it got great information to offer.
