Where shall we eat today? Has someone told you that Singaporean is addicted to food? It’s very truth. You can find food courts and hawker centre almost everywhere which sell all kinds of foods ranging from regional Chinese to Malay to Indian. And its does not really cost much. For as little as SGD 5, you would be able to enjoy a full meal at the food court or hawker centre. So are you craving for some roti prata or Char kway Teow right now?

Can I say most Singaporeans love to eat Durian? Durian is one of the most Favorite fruit of every Singaporean, and is known here as the King of Fruits!

Hawker centres

Food centres or Hawker centres can be find all over Singapore and are normally located near HDB estates or bus interchanges. For some of the Singaporean,it is more common to go to a food centre than to eat at a restaurant or even to cook at home.

This is an open-air place which house many stalls. You can find at least 30 stalls onward selling array of variety of foods. Prices are reasonably cheap.Walk around before you order your food and if you notice a long queue at the stall normally the food must be good .

Remember to inform the stall about where you sit. Food will be serve within 10 to 15 minutes. Some of the stalls don’t bring the foods up to your table so you have to self-service.

Here are some of the more popular food centres

  • Lau Pa Sat
  • Newton
  • East Coast

    Food courts

Food courts are very much similar to hawker centre or food centre. But it is more well organized then hawker centre. Most Food courts are located within shopping mall and are air condition.

More and more people prefer to patronize food court nowadays. The range of foods offer by food court is very much similar but they do add some international cuisine from, Thai, Japanese, Korean and more………

Normally you have to pay abit more to eat at the food court. Unlike hawker centres, you have to carry your own food to your table.

Most of the Shopping Malls have a food court within the mall and here are some of the food courts with great variety of selection of food

  • Vivo City
  • Suntec City

  • Good to know facts when you eat at hawker centre or food court

What to do if you can't find a seat?

Don’t be shy to ask about unoccupied seats. Singaporeans are very friendly. you can try this " Is this seat taken and can we share your table".

    How to mark your Territory?

When you need to go and order your food put a pack of tissues of the table, people will know that the seats have been taken. For safety reason don't leave your belonging unattended.

    How to order your food?

If you are a first timer, give yourself a minutes or so to walk around and explore the place. Most of the stalls display photos of the specialities and you can your order by pointing onto the photo of display if you find difficulty communicate with the hawker.

Remember to give your table number to the hawker. At self service stalls, you have to queue up to order your food, wait till the food is prepare and off you go.

    Coffee shops "kopitiam"

At the early day, kopitiam is mainly owned by the Hainanese due to the fact when the Hainanese was working for the British during the colonial era; they manage to acquire the skill of coffee brewing from the British. And so on, brewing skill has been passing down generation after generation.

Where can you find coffee shops in Singapore? Coffee shops normally located at residential area or at the ground floor of those old 2 storey shop houses. Not much of variety compare to hawker centre.

Remember to order a cup of black local coffee serve with porcelain cup and two slices of breads to go with it if you there!

You still can find lots of coffee shops that offer mouth watering food

  • Coffee shops along Geylang Road
